- Ok, after much discussion I tried A4060 myself. Here are my results
- and impressions. I do not say everybody will find the same, this is just my
- info. I was getting so many different opinion that I had to est it on my own.
-
- IMPRESSION:
-
- It is bad. The photocopied instructions are in German only and are very badly
- photocopied. The Apollo install loves to crash. The box was worse than a shoe
- box. It does NOT give an impression of professional product.
-
- GOOD:
-
- - The Apollo is certanly faster than my previous A1260, although sysinfo says it
- is 39MIPS. Mac runs about 20% faster than A1260.
- - Everything seems to work just fine except benchmark programs for testing video
- and CPU speeds (note: I also got a CV64 card, but can not make a benchmark for
- it).
- - VMM works (it doesn't quit righ, but it happened before wth my A1260 also).
- - All aplications I have work. I have no processor and gfx cards with Wordworth
- 5 and other programs. I couldn't find a program not to work on Apollo if it
- did run on A1260. SOme programs do not like the 060, like ixemul etc. This is
- NOT Apollo's fault.
- - The system seems stable to me if you don't mess with Shapeshifter and SCSI too
- much.
-
- BAD:
-
- - SCSI-II is non standard to say the least. It is next to non functional also.
- It works from amiga side not to well (the CD change detect is VERY bad and the
- JAZ drive change detect is non existant). Also if the Jaz spins down, you have
- to reboot. This didn't happen with squirrel I had before.
- - Most of the diagnostic and salvage functions crashes when it comes to SCSI
- devices.
- - Booting from a SCSI device is stupid. You must have your HD setup as unit 0,
- 1, etc. So you can not boot from ZIP drive. Special prepare program must be
- writen on RDB which is for amga only. It is hard to mount non amiga HD even
- with Cross Dos (you must make a mountlist for that).
- - Shapeshifter and SCSI DO NOT work. Not even if you say a HD or CD to be a
- device disk (whoich was mounted on Amiga first). Not even working with CD
- using mounting as a device with EMPCD. Nothing. Zero! There must be something
- wrong in the SCSI-Apollo.device, but funny that the HD works from amiga side
- quite well. Apart of that, SS runs without flaws. *
- - The memory isn't linked together. You must have 32Mb simm to have 32Mb
- continuous memory. But if you have 32 Mb and another 8 it should link
- together, because the 32Mb is as much as it goes in one socket, so the next
- 8Mb would start when the first one ended. It is my speculation at this time. I
- will post this when I find another simm.
-
- CONCLUSION:
-
- If you will leave the SCSI alone in the dark, I reccomend this board. It has no
- crashes, at least on A4000, if you don't mes with SCSI. Hovewer, with the price
- tag 1950 DEM I paid, it is NOT a good board. SCSI should be working! There is no
- excuse for that. I must buy a fastlane now to boot properly. So this is VERY
- bad. But on the other side, the board now costs 1600 DEM. The new Cyberstorm II
- will cost 1450 DEM. If you think it that Apollo desn' have SCSI built, so
- doesn't the cyberstorm. So Apollo is 150 DEM more expensive. One thing Apollo is
- and Cyberstorm is not is existance. I wa waiting for Cyberstorm for 3 months
- now. The new date is End of May. This is BAD. They are delaying it even further
- every day. So 150 DEM more for a board which works is not so bad. The bad thing
- is it has a SCSI which doesn't work. Maybe ACT guys will fix it in a resonable
- time (will you?). Until then, for me in Europe, Warp isn't selling and
- Cyberstorm also isn't selling. I was fearing that Apollo would be worse than it
- is. Just leave the scsi alone and buy another one if you decide to buy it.
-
- My thanx goes to Datakompaniet in Norway which were very helpfull to me with
- information, although I still haven't ordered the board from them. Thank you
- guys.
-
- * I didn't test that myself.

-
- PS - I heard that the card is MOST unstable with A3000, so be carefull if your
- config differs from mine.
-
- PS2 - I am not connected to Datacompaniet or ACT in any leal way.
